The festival is of uncertain origin, was probably in the year 1156 when Alfonso VII granted the title of city as  Mondoñedo and from that time they began to celebrate the holiday in honor of San Lucas.  In ancient times the festival lasted for fifteen days and now though the festival retains its medieval flavor of ancient times the festival last 5 days. You will enjoy events with horses, traditional local cuisine and wine, music from the regions famous “gaitas” or Galician bagpipes that put just the right touch of music in the air to make you feel you have stepped back in time. Hope you enjoy!
